International Winter School: “Remote Sensing of Precipitation Using Microwave Links: Techniques and Applications”

The Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK-IFU) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology invites young scientists to join leading researchers in the field of precipitation quantification by microwave attenuation for a winter school.

Background
For the improved understanding of all aspects of the regional water cycle, knowledge of the spatio-temporal distribution of precipitation is of crucial importance. Improved and scientifically sound water availability information, however, still suffers from the limited quality of available spatial rainfall products. Why is spatial rainfall estimation still so problematic? Traditional rain gauges provide good local measurements but their spatial representativeness is very low. In contrast, radar reflectivity measurements provide spatial pattern information but the transformation of reflectivity to rain rate values is accompanied by large uncertainties. The need for additional measurements has inspired the use of microwave links, which have been proven to provide more accurate rainfall estimates at the near-surface level.

Aim
The winter school will introduce the new technique of precipitation remote sensing using terrestrial microwave links to young researchers. The potential and limitations of the new technique, as well as solutions and practical examples will be presented by leading scientists in this field.

Venue
The winter school will take place in the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK-IFU) at Campus Alpine of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in the Bavarian mountain village of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, located at the foot of Germany’s highest peak Mount Zugspitze.

Costs
Tuition, accommodation and meals are free for all participants. There will be no travel grants.

Target Group
The winter school is open to young researchers (PhD students & Post-Docs) worldwide in meteorology, hydrology, environmental sciences, signal processing applications, precipitation remote sensing.

Summer School Ecohydrology 2007, Amsterdam

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and partners from the Boussinesq Center for Hydrology and the Bsik program ‘Climate for Space’ are organizing a summer school on Ecohydrology that is taking place June 11th – 15th of 2007. The course will consist of 10 half-day sessions. The aim of the course is to provide an overview of the current state of ecohydrology, and to give several in-depth examples of the ecohydrological functioning of different ecosystems around the globe.

The course is limited to 50 participants; if more than 50 participants apply, priority will be given to PhD students that are closely related to the field of ecohydrogy. The fee for the course is 250 euro, including beverages, fieldtrip, and dinner on the last day. Lodging and travel are not included, more information on lodging can be found on the website after April 2nd.

Summer School “Upscaling and modelling of coupled transport processes in the subsurface”, Utrecht University

Date: August 14 – 25, 2006
This Summer School dealt with upscaling of (coupled) subsurface flow and transport processes. For a proper description and modelling of complex processes in multi-scale heterogeneous subsurface, an appropriate method for transfer of information between various spatial scales is crucial. In this Summer School, fundamentals of various upscaling techniques applicable to coupled subsurface flow and transport modelling were presented and a number of applications were discussed.
